| Engaging Participation |
Instructors often ask for tips on how to attract participants to use Lecture123 effectively. Here's a short list of ideas to help engage your audience. We hope this sparks your creative process. Please email your innovative ideas to us.
Annotate...
When you record your session, annotate your slides with
your mouse or pen even if you are just highlighting points
on your slides. These marks along with your voice and slide
navigation increase participant attention and may improve
information retention.
Reward Collaboration...
Create a homework assignment to post questions on your lecture,
e.g. "best" question gets rewarded with 2 points bonus on next exam.
Student Presentations...
Have the students research a topic and record there own 2 minute
Lecture123 presentation. Then ask each student to post a question on
someone else's session, i.e. peer review.
Out of Class Content...
You record short mini sessions (< 5 minutes) that are NOT covered
in class. The only way they can get it is to use Lecture123.
Homework...
Record a homework assignment in Lecture123: show them the material
and ask them questions in the session -- they will experience the
assignment as though they are sitting with you, hit pause after you've
asked the question, work it out, and then post the answer by
right-clicking their mouse. You control when you want all students
to see each other's postings, i.e. their postings are not included
in the session until you approve them on the Lecture123 web site.
Evolving Dynamic Content...
You can add content to your class recordings AFTER class. You playback
the session and create your own QAs at key spots. You can put
interesting material in the QA window, e.g. links to web pages, or
embedded graphs. This does require some basic HTML knowledge, i.e.
when you ask or answer a question, you can type in HTML, e.g. you
would enter the following to insert the latest Dow Jones Index graph
from Google Finance:
<img src="http://www.google.com/pfetch/dchart?s=DJI">Imagine having this graph inside the QA collaboration channel along with your original session. Notice that this is the current graph for today, i.e. dynamic content!
To get that simply go to http://finance.google.com, right-click on the graph, and copy/paste the graph URL into the Lecture123 QA window.
You do need to put that URL in the <img ...> tag. Links look like<a href="URL">THE LINK TEXT</a>. If you want more complex HTML, you can always use an HTML editor program outside Lecture123 and copy/paste the resulting HTML code into the QA window either when asking a question in the Player or when answering the question on the Lecture123 web site.
Collab Channel...
Here's a sample session with interesting content added to
the QA collaboration channel after the session was published:
